Applying Applications
In this section, application design mainly refers to IT solutions (specific, traditional business solutions can be found in the business section.)
These IT solutions range from fairly small, (i.e. a ratings system for a web page), to much larger projects (i.e. creating a new site for training purposes).
Creating, building, or simply improving business and IT applications can be a daunting task; it often requires blending several areas of understanding. Recent projects have required:
- Integration of different concepts for the final application
- Management and blending of incompatible, or incomplete past data
- Consideration for the application's future needs.
- Conforming the application to the intended work environment.
- Evaluating potential users and their use of the application.
- Creating on-site and off-site training programs.
- Developing incentives to encourage continued use of new systems.
Methodology
The best part about consulting and working on applications is variety; no two projects are the same. However, I believe some common methodology exists when trying to determine the necessity and needs of your desired application.
- What are you trying to improve?
- Why does it need improvement?
- What are your goals for this application?
- Who will be using the application?
- How do these users currently manage without this application?
- What alternative solutions exist?
- Does this application make sense in regards to money? time savings? usefulness?
Examples
To get an even better idea of some real life applications, here is a list of recent applications and solutions with which I am involved:
- Ratings systems for web pages.
- On-line training for new employees, meeting ISO-9001 standards.
- A live-chat system designed to increase customer service.
- An on-line form and document repository.
- Dynamic web-based translation tools.
- Creation and implementation of e-commerce sites
- Updating sites, where necessary, with AJAX tools and programming.
- Development of social networking structures.
